clawdfree Full Experience: No Subscription, No Account, Direct API Relay to Enjoy Claude Code

clawdfree is a free command-line tool modified from Claude Code, requiring no subscription or Claude account, with support for relay API configuration. In practice, installation is simple, operation is stable, and it efficiently handles code refactoring and debugging tasks. It's an ideal choice for using Claude Code at low cost.

clawdfree Full Experience: No Subscription, No Account, Direct API Relay to Enjoy Claude Code

Claude Code is great — anyone who has used it generally agrees. But two barriers have always stood in the way: one is the subscription threshold, starting at $20 per month, and the other is network issues, with direct connections largely dependent on luck.

Especially for those who frequently need to switch API relay lines, configuring each time can be a hassle. I've tried several solutions — either requiring repeated credit card verification, or unstable lines that keep disconnecting. Recently I came across the clawdfree project, which has a very straightforward positioning — no subscription, direct support for relay APIs, and the ability to run Claude Code tools without needing a Claude account. It sounds like it knocks down both barriers at once, so I decided to give it a try.

Installation: Faster Than I Expected

clawdfree is based on a modified version of Claude Code v2.1.88, packaged as a ready-to-use command-line tool. There are no complex dependency installations, and no need to log into a Claude account. Unzip it and run it directly — you're greeted with the standard Claude Code interactive interface. That first impression was good; it's largely consistent with the official version in terms of visuals and workflow.

Configuring the relay API is also straightforward. In the initialization settings, you just enter your relay API address and Key. I used a relay line I've been using for a while, filled in the details, and tested the connection. The latency was around 180ms — not blazing fast but stable and usable.

How It Performs in Practice

I ran several real tasks to test it. The first was refactoring a React component — converting a heavily coupled class component into a functional component with hooks. clawdfree's context recognition speed felt similar to what I experienced with the genuine Claude Code, and the response times for code completions and modification suggestions were roughly on par.

The second scenario was debugging asynchronous logic in a Python script. Claude Code's strength lies in its ability to read error information directly in the terminal, analyze the call stack, and provide actionable fixes. clawdfree didn't drop the ball here — the suggestions were almost identical to those from the genuine Claude Code. This isn't surprising, since under the hood it still leverages Claude's model capabilities.

However, there was one noticeable difference: after several consecutive conversation turns, clawdfree's responses occasionally paused briefly — about 2-3 seconds. I suspect this is due to request queuing on the relay line rather than a tool issue. If you're using a faster relay node, this problem should be less pronounced.

Trade-offs Compared to Official Claude Code

After using it for a while, I think clawdfree's core positioning is clear: it doesn't aim to replace official Claude Code, but rather provides a lighter entry point for those who don't want a subscription or need to switch lines frequently.

Several clear advantages:

  • No need for a Claude account — saves the hassle of registration and card binding
  • Direct support for custom relay API addresses — a must-have for users in certain regions
  • Fully retains Claude Code's terminal interaction and file writing capabilities

Things to consider:

  • Update pace depends on the maintainer, not as frequent as the official version
  • If you already have a long-term Claude Pro subscription, the official version offers a more complete experience
  • The stability of your relay API determines your actual experience — clawdfree itself doesn't provide relay lines, so you need to prepare a usable relay node on your own

When Is It Worth Trying?

I think clawdfree is best suited for two types of people. One is those who haven't used Claude Code before and want to get a thorough hands-on experience before deciding whether to pay — no subscription required, so you can dive right in without decision cost. The other is those who already have a stable relay API but keep getting stuck on the official account verification steps — this solution bypasses the most frustrating part.

If you're not familiar with relay APIs and don't want to figure out how to configure lines, going with the official subscription is more hassle-free. clawdfree solves the problem of "knows how to configure but doesn't want to be tied to an account," not the problem of "zero experience, ready to go."

Some Reservations

Being based on v2.1.88 means it won't sync official new features immediately. If you heavily rely on the latest Claude Code features — such as certain newer commands or toolchains — there may be a lag. Additionally, the tool itself does not offer any form of warranty or support; issues are mainly resolved through community discussions and self-troubleshooting.

I've been using clawdfree as a daily backup tool, mainly switching to it when debugging small projects or needing quick code analysis. It's not perfect, but at the intersection of "no subscription" and "relay API support," it's currently the most direct solution available.
