Say Goodbye to Official Restrictions: Use clawdfree to Enable Claude Code with Proxy API

Introducing the clawdfree project, which modifies Claude Code v2.1.88 to allow users to use Claude Code via a proxy API, without the need for an official account or regional unlocking.

Say Goodbye to Official Restrictions: Use clawdfree to Enable Claude Code with Proxy API

The most frustrating things about using Claude Code are two: first, you need a subscription to Pro, and second, there are regional restrictions. If you're like me and your primary API has already moved to a third-party proxy, then the official client is basically out of reach—until I tried the clawdfree project.

This tool is essentially a modified version of Claude Code v2.1.88. What did it change? The simplest way to put it is: it routes all your Claude Code requests to a proxy API, and you don't even need a legitimate Claude account on hand.

First Impressions: Almost No Difference from the Official Version

After downloading and extracting the package, what surprised me most was the user experience. Type in the command, and it launches the familiar Claude Code interactive interface—prompts, code editing suggestions, file understanding, multi-turn conversations—all exactly the same. If you don't look closely, you might even think it's the official client.

But behind the scenes, it's no longer going through the official channel. There are only two key configurations: API Endpoint and API Key. Fill in your proxy address and your proxy key, and you can start chatting immediately. The first time I tested it, I used the SiliconFlow API, asked a question about React Server Components, and the response quality and speed were normal—though that depends on the quality of your proxy and the model's inherent limitations.

Practical Operation: Some Honest Points

Because this is based on v2.1.88, it doesn't mean it can keep up with the latest official changes. Claude Code itself iterates quickly; if you're after the latest version's Agent debugging features or newer workflow support, this version might lag a bit.

Another thing: file operation permissions. This modified version retains the original file read/write capabilities, meaning theoretically it can directly modify project code and create files, just like the official client. I personally recommend keeping an eye on your proxy provider's privacy policy when using a proxy API—your code content and file paths will pass through a third-party server.

One more detail worth mentioning: MCP tool compatibility. I tested clawdfree with a few custom MCP servers; they connected, but occasionally there would be connection timeouts, which directly depend on the stability of your proxy线路. If the proxy latency is high, MCP responses may error out.

Who It's For and Who It's Not For

I know many people search for Claude Code proxy API tools because they have unused API credits or don't want to pay $20 a month for Claude Pro. In that case, clawdfree is almost the most straightforward solution—zero barrier to entry, ready to use out of the box, and good compatibility.

If you fall into any of the following categories, you might consider it:

  • You already have a reliable proxy API Key and don't want to bother with account subscriptions
  • You use Claude Code frequently but are blocked by regional restrictions
  • You want to integrate Claude Code into your local development environment without going through the official billing channel

Conversely, if you have concerns about the following, evaluate for yourself:

  • Your code is extremely sensitive and you don't want any code passing through third-party servers
  • You rely on the latest Claude Code features (e.g., the newest Agent workflows)
  • You don't have a stable proxy API source and are using free test keys—the experience will be terrible, with slow speeds and random model switching

Some Personal Reservations

clawdfree is solidly built, but it's not a tool that lets you "set it and forget it." The official Claude Code is constantly updated; whether this project can keep pace and be maintained long-term is a question mark. Also, the "no subscription" feature is indeed tempting, but don't expect it to bypass all restrictions—it just shifts billing from a monthly fee to pay-as-you-go (via your proxy API).

If you want to go further down this path, finding a proxy service with stable latency and support for Claude-3-Sonnet or Opus models is key. Cheap proxy keys often fail under high concurrency, and clawdfree itself won't take the blame for that.

Overall assessment: If you already have a proxy setup, clawdfree is currently the most recommended all-in-one alternative. If you're still hesitating, you can run a demo in your project to test the waters first—don't jump straight into a production environment.
